messed up sound on lucid

I use audiacity, for editing my radio show bits and bobs. However, I now seem to have both pulse and alsa on, this works for audiacity. But I don't get anysound in my web browser.

Oh I use idjc for broadcasting, which uses jack, so
I'd prefer just alsa. Any ideas on how to strip out pulse and just use alsa.

I have tried some of the jaunty tutorials, but they have not worked totally.

well I am making progress.
first i sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio
Then I followed http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

but when I goto system preferances sound it doesn't work. also to try to config alsa using alsamixer i get
Code:
johnh@tux:~$ alsamixer
ALSA lib pulse.c:229:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused

cannot open mixer: Connection refused
johnh@tux:~$
sound is working, just need to beable to config what it records namly the mic or soundcard output

if someone could help in this final bit i'd appreciate it.
