Hey!

i was installing knoppix-std on my laptop from the live CD.
when i type the command #mkfs.ext2 /dev/hda1
all seemed fine. But when the command was done my laptop reboted (low power)
And when my computer started agine it said "OS is missing"
becuse i was running win_xp before my question is can i get it back with all the prior data?

Is there a reason you formatted the first partition on your drive?

Ouch, that one stung a bit!

To clarify for the original poster: You reformatted the first partition on your harddrive, which is most likely where Windows XP was originally installed, especially given your "OS is missing" error on reboot. Depending on where you installed Knoppix (hopefully to some place other then /dev/hda1), your intent with the mkfs command may have well been to wipe out Windows XP and move to Knoppix only. Your issue would then be that you didn't install a bootloader for Linux to the MBR. So it's still trying to boot Windows which was wiped out at your request (via mkfs).

If you didn't really mean to wipe out your first partition ... ouch! I'm not sure how you can recover. Some low level recovery-after-format tool possibly. Don't go writing anything to that first paritition just yet until you know for yourself what happened and have a recovery plan. Trying something like "reinstalling Windows" would scramble into oblivion what data might still be retrievable from that freshly formatted partition.

I honestly didn't mean for that to "sting" or seem like a slap to the OP. I was just trying to understand what he was doing, and I saw no connection to the formatting in the other parts of his post. Sorry if it seemed rude.

No, no, no. I wasn't meaning to say that your comment stung. I was trying to say that the OP's actions might have stung him a bit. Subtle differences of intent vs. understanding often show up in postings. I need to learn from that and review my specific wording.

Where is OP????

We don't know from his post if he has (or had) dual-boot. We also do not know where in the install process he formatted hda1.

(We also hope that his data was backed up.....)
