Merging photos (as in jpg's tif's png's and so on)

I was going to title it merging images, but being a computer thing, it sure sounds like merging backups or something.

Anyway, is there any software out there, or a plugin for gimp that you can open up 4 images, and have them merge there edges together to create 1 large panoramic image?

Here's an example of something I did with a program a long time ago in win that might help you see what I am talking about:
It's the stiched photo.

Anyway, any suggestions?
