memcache not working

I installed memcached and memcache, compiled by source, and still I get :

Fatal error: Cannot instantiate non-existent class: memcache in xxxx.php on line 2

The script used is :

<?php
$memcache = new Memcache;
@$memcache->connect('127.0.0.1', 11211);
print_r($memcache->getStats());

?>

Need help to get it working.
