I have an old 500 Mhz box that I'm using as a file server. I use it to back up important files from my windows desktop and Lap top and to house all my music files. It's patched into my Home Theater, so I can use it to play the files.
Right now I have windows 2000 on it and use a special plug in for winamp that allows me to control an instance of winamp on the server remotely without having to use a remote desktop app like VNC.
The computer is still ungodly slow with windows, and since I'm more familiar with remoting with linux, I want to switch it over.
What I need to do, however, is find a media player that allows control via a socket connection. So the media player passes info about the song loaded, the play list, the songs availible, ect... over the network to a remote computer, which then reads this and displays it as if the media player were running locally. Then the controls on the media player would be passed along via network to the server to control it.

Sorry, but it's my favourite app ever because I am so in love with the whole client-server model it has going. Would be perfect for you too, there are linux GUI clients, linux CLI clients, web-based clients, Windows client, Mac clients and I even wrote a Bluetooth client so I can control it from my mobile
thanks. I gave mpd a good look and it appears it does exactly what I want it to. Now the question is.... is there a windows based front end that will interact with the server besides the php version?
Glurp is GTK based and KMP is in QT, which means they should be able to be ported to windows, but I was wondering if anyone has done such a thing
