Hi, for a descent media player which can play anything from the range of mp3's to DVD's and DivX, use mplayer:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ it should compile without any problem with any newer version of Linux. Just make sure to read their documentation before trying to install anything and you will do fine. You don't need any anti-virus in Linux. Just make sure to never login as root, just for editing certain files and starting/stopping services and you will be fine. A firewall is important, not as in Windows, but still. Check for iptables or Firestarter. They usually come with every distribution. If you need more assistance, try searching the forum. Questions about media players, anti-virus, firewall and p2p are really frequent. Good luck! |
mplayer is really good, but it's not included in every distribution (for example its not in debian).
vlc and xine are also good apps, and should be out-of-the-box available for most distros. yeah, you dont need antivirus for linux as it is for windows desktops. linux though has lots antivirus software (for mailserver for example). amavis/clamav are nice things. |
personally I like mplayer for media and clamav for antivirus
|
For media player, you can try AmaroK it is best for music IMHO (no video capabilities tough). Calmav is antivirus to go and iptables is you firewall :). For setting it up you can try my iptables script (Work in progress, but will work perfectly, unless you want things like nat'ing and forwarding). The script is here.
