ok apparently as I have realized there is like no media capability with linux when you install it........

so lets start a thread and figure this out shall we?

I need to know where to get the plugins and how to install them

the plugins for viewing wmp files
Avi files
mp3 files
real media files

help me out people...

there is plenty of media support, but things like that are not part of "linux" but part of the distribution itself, in this case erdhat decided to specifically remove mp3 support fdrom all programs it put on in rh8 and 9... not sure why... odd people.

you want plugin support for a web browser do you? in that case install http://mplayerhq.hu and http://mplayerplug-in.sf.net and that will play everything listed there. IF you set up mplayer correctly. there are additional addons for xmms (winamp clone) for mp3 support at xmms.org if that's what you mean.

AVI files + real media files = MPlayer / Xine
MP3 files + Ogg files = xmms

what's an wmp file?? is that windows media player?? if it is then again thats mplayer and / or xine.

Plugger works really well for Mozilla. After you get mplayer installed, check out Plugger in google.

Oh, and here's the plugins page for Mozilla .

You can either try and install an older version of Plugger, or you can grab a newer version of GCC from rpmfind.net that works with your distribution. The thing to keep in mind is that the age of your distro means that a lot of the newer software won't work on it without having to do a LOT of various updates. You could end up in dependancy Hell.

Or you could install mplayer and Xine from an apt-get repository with apt for Red Hat 7.3
It will take care of all the dependency problems for you.

install both rpms (not the source rpm)
# apt-get update
# apt-get install synaptic

and you've got a nice frontend to apt-get.

Edit: for the codecs, go to http://www.mplayerhq.hu and grab the Windows codec pack which you extract in /usr/lib/win32, that's all ;)

I cant download anything from rpmfind.net because when I go to download somthing it says

plugger: No approperiate application for type audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin found!

how do I fix this?

Right-click on the RPM link and choose Save Target As...

hahaha ok well here goes I dowloaded the new version of GCC for my distro

it happens to be version 2.96-113

went to install it and it said I need

glibc-devel-2.2.5

and

cpp-2.96-113

so I downloaded it

and tried to install it and it said I need kernal headers 2.2.1 grrrr

so All I need to do now is get an update for kernal headers I guess and then install glibc to be able to configure mplayer...

where can I get kernal headers 2.2.1?

is that the same as a kernel source rpm??

I dont know all I know is I need to know or I cant play any media

and without it its horrible...

Installing the kernel source should take care of that.

And if you followed the advice I gave in my previous post you wouldn't have to worry about that at all, synaptic would have taken care of all the dependencies for you just by selecting mplayer for download, no ./configure, no enable-gui stuff, no "shit I forgot to include the quicktime codec in the configure script", etc.

But hey, everyone his way.
If you look at it the other way, you would probably learn more by installing mplayer from source than I would by using apt4rpm.
