The lines in mc are made of empty box glifs and lower case letters and it generally doesn't display properly to the point of being unusable in an Eterm in Enlightenment in X.

It can't be the Eterm perhaps because it does the same with rxvt - which an faq says is compatible with mc. I've tried different 'fonts' (they should be called type faces) no joy; I've fiddled with terminfo's database using tic, no joy. mc -a doesn't work. (Should be said this was all inept).

It worked before, in Debian Sarge, this is in Etch. Any suggestions - no filth.

Does mc behave itself when you first set the locale
to C rather than whatever you're on by default?
