Matrix Screensaver
Does anyone know where I can find the Matrix screensaver? I'm running KDE 3.1 and Mandrake 9.1
I had kmatrix.kss and KMatrix.desktop from http://www.linuxdesktop.net but that site doesn't seem to be up anymore.....

it's in xscreensaver, too. xscreensaver-demo& --> XMatrix. i think i've also seen it under a different name in other xscreensaver versions.

well I tried the link from google...the instructions make no sense whatsoever. There's like 10 files on there and it's not reallly clear which is the one I want (i'm running mdk 9.1). There used to be a kmatrix.kss and KMatrix.desktop file i could just put in /usr/bin and /usr/share/applnk-mdk/.hidden/ScreenSavers/ but this guy gives nothing of the sort.
xscreensaver--i've tried that, but I'd like to avoid installing that just to get 1 screensaver.
If anyone has it, could they just email/aim the files to me ?

http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/ has an xmatrix screen hack which should be what you're looking for, along with a newer 3-D matrix screensaver based on Matrix Reloaded. The kmatrix screensaver is a modified version of xmatrix, so you should be in familiar territory. xscreensaver also has dozens of other really cool screen hacks you'll probably like (that aren't necessarily in KDE's screensaver. There should be an xscreensaver option inside of KDE's screensaver control panel. You would probably want to add a script to start xscreensaver in your ~/.kde/Autostart/ directory.
While you're in the neighborhood, check out
http://rss-glx.sourceforge.net/ to get some more really cool screen hacks for xscreensaver (including another Matrix-themed hack). Hardware-accelerated OpenGL is highly recommended.
Oh, and most distros should have both xscreensaver and KDE's kscreensaver available in their package collections. Check there first before trying to compile from scratch - it may save you some work.

Xscreensaver 4.12 doesn't include matrix screensaver
I just installed the tar for xscreensaver 4.12 and the screensaver works fine (windowmaker, mandrake 9.2). There seem to be 50 screensavers or so to choose from but the "matrix" or "xmatrix" screensaver is not available. Any ideas as to why it doesn't show up?
Thanks,
Ian

rpm mistake
I apologize--dumb mistake. I actually had a previous version 12 of xscreensaver installed: because I used "rpm -e xscreensaver-gl-4.12-1mdk" instead of "rpm -ve xscreensaver" I did not get rid of it before installing the 15 version. I ended up getting version 15 RPM because I was getting errors when executing "make" with the tar (same problem as magicvash).

same problem
i'm having the same problem with mandrake 10.0 official. using the mandrake rpm manager i removed the xscreensaver that came with the distro and then ran the rpm that i d/l: xscreensaver-4.14-4-mdk yadd yadda yadda, but i still do not see the xmatrix at all. is xmatrix included in the 4.14 version? i also have teh 4.18 tarball but i had problems make-installing which is why i turned to the 4.14 rpm, should i get a more recent rpm? and i do'nt like the kmatrix one either.

Actually Mandrake took xmatrix out of the xscreensaver rpm. Some kind of stupid lawsuit fear. Not an actual lawsuit, just the fear of one. Even though no other distro has removed it.

Xscreensaver / MANDRAKE CE 10.1
I have reading this thread with interest and I am just having the same problem with some ppl on here.
I guess both Mandrake and Fedora have the same Xscreen saver module (but diff. version, thou) RPM. The strange thing is that under FC2 I can see (almost) all the xcreensaver hacks including the breathless ones: OPENGL, that works smoothly with a 3D accelerated videocard. Under Mandrake, it seems Mandrake ppl have stripped off all of the OPENGL ones, just the ugliest 2D savers I can select. I cannot see "SPOTLIGHT ANT" "LAMENT" "GL-ONES" and the likes listed on the screensaver management applet.
I have downloaded the newest version Xscreensaver off Internet ( http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/) and it seems pretty hard to install under mandrake.
Anybody knows how to address this issue? I would like to see screen GL hacks under Mandrake (either on KDE or GNOME enviroment)
Thanks for anybody's advices
