What sort of program is Mathematica, exactly?
A graph drawing program?
If so, did you install the KDE desktop environment when you installed FC3?
(Assuming that FC3 comes with KDE, like FC4 does), and all the "edutainment" features?
It comes with KPlot, a great program for drawing all things f(x), plus integrals and differentials, etc. If this is the sort of thing you're looking for, I recommend KPlot.
Mathematica is _much_ more than just drawing graphs.
There is a free clone of matlab, octave. People who have tried say, though, that is is not as polished as matlab and the compatibility is not perfect either.
hi there,
i used matlab for some time under Windows. And today i am an octave user. as the previous poster said you can have some compatibility problems, mostly if you work with high customized .m files: some built-in functions won't return the same. as for "polished", I think we need to define it. What is a "polished" app?
I also recommend the octave mail lists. They discuss a lot and people are really helpful there.
