Math Softwares

I need to find a Mathematic software that can run on Linux. Something similar to Mathematica or Matlab. I need be able to program (writing scripts) with that program. Do you have any recommendation?

I have found Maxima, but sometimes it acts a little weird. Besides, it is hard to find a book about Maxima or Macsyma. Do you know any good online resources? The ones provided on the website of Maxima are not completed. (For example, it lacks the whole chapter talking about Matrices and Vector.)
I have also installed Mathematica on Linux Fedora Core 4, but it refused to run.

If ypou want "something similar to" Mathematica or Matlab, why not use Mathematica or Matlab?
