Mate and Awesome WM running very slow on encrypted partition and Nvidia card

I setup gentoo with FDE using dm-crypt LUKS and LVM. Everything seems to be going well however after I emerged mate and awesome either desktop environment was running very slow. I think this means there is a problem with X11 but I am not sure. When ever I logout of the awesome or mate session after manually using startx I see a long string of the same message.

I have no Idea what this means but I think it is causing the problem. Any thoughts?

I unmerged the nvidia-drivers from portage and disabled the nouveau driver in the kernel. Now mate starts and responds without the above error message? However lspci -k shows I am still using the nouveau driver from the nvidia.ko module. Weird?
