Angry mariadb, phpmysql. Can not login with phpmyadmin

I've never been this frustrated... no, I'm angry. What the XXXX I'm missing here?!?!
I used google to the point that my eyes and fingers are bleeding.......

I used to install mariadb(and before mysql) and phpmyadmin, configed it and it worked, but not now and I'm climbing the walls here to the point that I get big bleeding bumps on my head.
I'm screaming my anger out to the point that my wife's telling me to STFU.

I can login with to mariadb using SSH but not using phpmyadmin.
I've tried the same 'at the server', thus LOCALLY (my own server) and still getting the same result with phpmyadmin.
Been fiddling with this for 2 whole days now and that is WAY too much.

Please spam this post with thoughts because I have not one bit of clue what to do
also ask away for any more info you might need to solve this... this... ARGH#¤#"

phpmyadmin runs on same host as mysql server? The host you login into with ssh?

Yes, same server. I host this server myself so I can do whatever I want to it, I installed it from scratch.

Could you tell phpmyadmin version you installed?
Did you configure something in phpmyadmin?
Could you access to phpmyadmin login page?

Normally it should connect 'out of the box', ie you uncompress phpmyadmin archive in web server accessible directory, assign a virtual host for it (or put it in a subdirectory in the main server document root), then use mysql user/password at phpmyadmin login page.

PHP-version
Code:
PHP 5.4.16 (cli) (built: Mar 7 2018 13:34:47)
Copyright (c) 1997-2013 The PHP Group
Zend Engine v2.4.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2013 Zend Technologies
Nothing configured in phpMyAdmin.
Yes, I get to the login page but the password will not work. Also tried changing password but still won't work in phpMyAdmin but works by login in console via SSH

All updates are added

I now found my error. Since I moved the database files to another partition I also moved the socket-file but it seems
that is read that location from my.cnf in just some cases so I removed that so it would use the default location for it and now it works.

I didn't see this from phpMyAdmin but when I tried to connect to the website that uses a database, which is not yet created, it told me this
error instead of no database exists. Weird that no error like this is shown in the login page on phpMyAdmin, would have helped a lot.
