mariadb & optimizer hints?

Hello folks

MariaDB was forked from MySQL after Oracle took over MySQL.

1)
Does MariaDB support the optimizer hints as MySQL does?
I did experiment a bit and so far my own answer is "no with the exception of what is mentioned here".
Is this correct?

2)
If the above is more or less correct: why?
Maybe MariaDB was forked from a pre-Oracle version and there is no exchange between the two forks?

Hmm, looking at their home site it doesn't look like they have community forums (unlike MySQL), but they do have an irc channel https://mariadb.com/resources/community-tools.
I'd ask there ...
