Mapping the items in .config to the menu in make menuconfig

Hi all,
When compiling the kernel, we usually use "make menuconfig" or modify the .config file..

I would like to ask, what is the relationships between .config. Config.in and make menuconfig?
Is there any recommend website/material for teaching more on kernel?

Thank you very much
Alice

i think this is not to do with kernel specifically, but rather to do with automake utility. it should be a sourceforge project, and read documentation regarding automake then you will gain more information.
