Manually select torrent chunks to download

Hi
Is there any way (or trick ) to manually tell the torrent programs (specially KTorrent) to download which chunk of torrent or force it to download first chunks first?
10x.

No. Not that I know of, anyway.

However, in ktorrent you can tell it to focus more on some files than others. What you need to do is activate the "info widget" in the ktorrent plugins. Then you can go to the "files" tab it gives you, right click on the files you want, and choose "download first". This won't make it download that file only, but it will make it preferentially select chunks for that file so that it should usually finish earlier than the others.

Do note that this won't help you at all if the torrent contains only one file.

10x
I know about "info widget" but it doesn't help.
Actually I want to make it possible to get a preview for XVID videos so at least some megabytes (header + some amount of frames) must be downloaded but sometimes download will focus on the final or middle chunks so preview is not possible and sometimes that download is waste of time.
Its fine to force it to download special chunk or at least make more priority for peers that serve these first chunks.
10x for attention.

By chunks do you mean files within a torrent or something else?

David the H. 06-07-2008 07:08 AM

I know what you mean; I've wished for the same thing. But nope, there's no way to specify individual chunks. At least not with ktorrent.

@oli: Each torrent is subdivided into a certain number of equal-sized "chunks", perhaps 128k, 256k, or 1mb each, depending on the total torrent size, and it's these chunks that are passed between the peers. The individual files themselves have little to do with it, except inasmuch as they are composed of chunks.

Ah OK. Fair enough. :)

but this chunk preference, is rather a good idea

might it be possible to be coded ?

10x all
@David the H.: Thanks for help.
@frenchn00b: yes, I don't know java and didn't found any reference for KTorrent & its plugins but I'll try to do something with TorrentFlux.
