The plugin needs to be installed in the main firefox directory e.g. /usr/lib/firefox/plugins. I am not sure where Debian puts firefox but on must distros its usually /usr/lib/firefox or /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox.

OK - Lets sort this out. I found out I do have a /usr/lib/firefox/plugins directory. Now what do I do from here? Do I run the flash-installer as root and when it asks me for where my browser is, what do I say?

Run the installer as root and then enter /usr/lib/firefox as the firefox directory.
