Manual mounting; disabling hal?

Hi list,

Lately I'm becoming a bit irritated about Fedora mounting any storage device through pop-up windows and placing them at /media/disk. For unmounting one then has to find a clear workspace to 'safely remove' the device.

Secretly I am longing to the time when, using udev-rules and fstab, I could plugin a device and use the command line to manually mount and unmount it.

The automounting in Fedora seems to be handled by hal and its daemon, but hal does more than mounting storage devices so I'm not sure if it is wise to disable the haldaemon. What would be the correct way to stop hal from mounting my storage devices?

Regards,
Regulus

The actual mounting isn't handled by HAL, but by a volume manager such as ivman. Thus the correct method would be to either turn off your volume manager or configure it to do nothing when a device is inserted. Exactly how you do that depends on the volume manager you're using. If you're running GNOME, it's probably gnome-volume-manager. I'm not a GNOME user, though, so I have no idea how to configure it.
