MandrakeLinux 10.1 - Graphic card issue; doesn't install properly
I'm sorry if I'm being some pest, needing help with various Operating Systems, Suse and Mandriva. I'll answer what you wrote in and asked me what to do in a moment. Right now, I want to take care of this one issue that I haven't been able to solve for ages. On MandrakeLinux (first OS I ever started with), I am having problems with installing a graphic driver update. I believe I have the right file through NVidia. I'll try to be the most detailed I can be, being I probably formatted and re-installed MandrakeLinux 10.1 about 20 times already due to lock ups. When I try to install this driver, it says I'm missing files. The last I remember, it's possibly some gcc files, cc files, kernel-source I believe, and kernel module. I'm not sure if I'm even installing the right files, being when I go through this, it still says some are missing, like compilers and modules.
When I install it, It says "building modules", but after it's installed, and I reboot, it locks up. The lock up occurs between the "NVIDIA Splash Screen", and when it's loading everything just before the actual desktop. The monitor also has a high pitch squeal. It's not too loud, but certainly noticeable. I still have a file saved that tells me how to change it in the XF86conf and Xorg.conf (or something along those lines, not sure the exact file name, but can recognise it when I see it) I change this device from "vesa" to "nv" or "nvidia", but still doesn't work. I imagine it's because of missing files. The thing is, when I search for files in the software update area, there is quite a list for some of these. I'm not sure which one to even install, or all, or some. Please help! If this works, I imagine the PC game "Descent 3" would work better, and hopefully the DVD at full screen with a nice sharp crystal clear picture. Please, please, please help!
