Hello, Ive been trying to install Mandrake v8.0 on a friend's Compaq Presario computer, dual booting with Win98.
The installation appears to go OK. On booting to linux, the process hangs, same when using the boot floppy, or choosing failsafe on the lilo menu. Win98, however, loads OK.
Is the problem with the Compaq, or Mandrake? (my Mandrake installed OK on a generic PC). Would Red Hat be better?

If you have the bandwith/time, I would download Mandrake 8.2.
As for the problems, does the computer actually 'hang', or is it just taking a really long time to load some process or another? I found that if you've set the computer up to use DHCP networking (automatic IP configuration), and it's the only computer on the network (i.e. the others have all been turned off), then it can take up to 10 mins for Mandrake to get past the network stage at boot time.
