mandrake or suse or red hat or freebsd

Hi I am almost asking the same question I did earlier but I am still curious as to what the major differences are in all these linux distributions? I have not found any site's that explain exactly what version is good for whom. I am specifically intersted in using stuff like matlab, octave and learning programming languages like perl, C, C++ etc. Can anyone offer any help as to which distro is good for me. Thanks

Radiolinux:
I have no experience with suse or freebsd, but Mandrake and Red Hat are virtually the same. Mandrake's configuration tools seem to work better that Red Hat's, but functionally, they are the same.

FreeBSD is not Linux

FreeBSD isn't Linux, Linux isn't Unix, GNU's not Unix...
But they're all Free Software, and that's the main thing.
If you're beginning to learn C, perl, etc. the differences
in distros (and kernel) won't concern you much. Some but
not much, and you'll have to deal with updates within one
distro anyway. Just get a working install, take it from there.
(Make sure gcc, browser & editor you choose work)
