Mandrake Install at older computer!
 

Heya All.

I have an old computer...well maybe old isn't the word, it's more likely ready to be send at a museum ;) Nonetheless is it the only one I have, and would like to give Linux Mandrake a try. I'm not the big gamer so I don't really borther about all that stuff.

Anyway I got a mate to download Mandrake 8.0 to me ( yeah, it's a bit old by now, but I was told it was the most stable ). Now when I try to boot my computer at the cd isn't it even booting from it... so I asked my mate if there was some bootdisk I could get, he searched for a few days and found one, and it does work but just after the initializing of the bootprocess does it look like it want to continue in a higher resolution than my screen is capeable of.

I really want to get Linux in so that I might get a faster computer ( is this only rumors or is Linux faster... I haven't been able to find any places which speak about that ).

Well thsi post got longer than i expected.. my main goal of it was actually: how do I install Linux Mandrake 8 at a computer which these spec.

Intel Pentium 166MHz
Quantum 2 GB HD
12 Spin Cd-Rom Drive
Standard Foppydrive
48 MB SD-Ram

Then last thing; Is every Linux actually the same with only a few changes ? I'm pretty new in this. Last thing... Will I be able to use / open my Word97 stuff at Linux ?

Most older computers won't boot from the CD Rom. One way to tell is to bring up your bios when it boots. There are options in there to tell it where to boot from.

No cd. But I have the bootdisk as I said :)

But if I can't install Mandrake.. is there other Linux's I could try ( newbie )

1) There are office suites for Linux with converters. (Ex: StarOffice, OpenOffice.org, AbiWord, etc.)
2) I am assuming the worst, put the disk in the disk drive, turn on the computer, put the CD in the CD drive and wait; what does it say.
3) I installed the lastest Red Hat on 100MHz. I doesn't have any problems.

Everything looks fine. It shows the entire initializing-procedure, and then continues to the graphical mandrake install. When I hit the button named something with install does it switch to blackscreen, and there it all stops. I can see a green line in the top of the monitor just like it normal looks when your computer freezes. After a few secs can't I even use CTRL-Del anymore :/

When (and if) you get to the screen where it says to press Enter to install, or F1 for advanced options (or wait and it starts automatically), press F1. From there, you can enter commands, and it gives you some examples. Type in "text" or "textinstall" or whatever it says, I forget exactly; (It shows you exactly what you should type for a text mode install on that screen)

Good luck; The text mode install for Mandrake can be a real pain when you get to the package selection.
