Mandrake help
hello all i have heard so much about mandrake and it sounded so good i wanted to give it a go kwick run down on what i have and what i have done.
i bought a new box with a asus p4p800-e deluxe with one gig of dual chanel 400 hz ram and a wd 80 gig hd now the problems
i could not get the disk to boot from this new machine so i hooked the hd up to a machine that would boot the cd that was i guess the first mistake. i was able to load the first 2 disks but the 3rd was bad so i canceled the last install. the machine went through the reboot and everything went well i was able to surf the web and start to learn some..
now tonight i removed the hd and placed it into the machine that was built for it it went through some config things np there i think.. but now i am stuch at a screen asking this question
Mandrake Linux release 10.0 (offical) for i586
kernel 2.6.3-7mdk on an i686 / tty1
localhost login:
i dont know the localhost login name or password!
now i dont know what to do i can not lreload the sw i have tryed and no go how do i go about fixing this thanks in advance

Ok here is the deal. The system you installed it on I am assuming was totally different then the new one. Video card and such. Here is the deal the install you have is configured for the system it was installed in. What you have there is a command prompt. Log in would be your user name for the account you created and password is the one you used for the account. Try to start x windows after you log in using startx and see if you will be able to get your desktop up and then you can configure the system from the MDK control panel to have the right video setting and to boot into x when the system starts if you want. If you can't get x up and running by using startx there is a mandrake config application you can use from the command line to have it detect and allow you to make necessary changes. Problem is I can't remember the applications name due to not having video issues in a long while but they have an explanation of it and its name on their site.

Try logging in as root if you remember that password. The command you need to run after you login is DrakConf.
If you don't remember root password then just search LQ for "forgot password" or something similar and there are several threads here to help you out.

Try renaming the .xauthority file, it should create a new one when you run startx.
mv .Xauthority old.Xauthority
