mandrake 9.1 wireless woes...or a plea for help
Hello,
just switched from mandrake 8.0 to mandrake 9.1 on my dell laptop using a dwl650 wireless pcmcia card (also have a linksys wpc11) with mandrake 8.0 getting the dlink card to work was no problem...however with mandrake 9.1 so far have not been able to get it working at all.
heres what i've done so far
su to root and run drakconf
goto network and internet
goto drakconnect
run the wizard with autodetect and expert mode checked
it runs finds the card no problem and asks for ip settings
plug in the ip settings
everythings fine except it never asks for the wep settings or essid or any of the wireless settings
I cant figure out for the life of me where i can force it to ask for those settings or even where i can manually set them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
caleb

OK, I wouldn't trust any GUI tools if I were you. Read this
I don't know anything about intalling the wlan-ng rpms for Mandrake but it shouldn't be hard or maybe you could compile them. You set your encryption in /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.opts.
Keep what you try posted so that others may learn since wireless is a common prblem on this forum

here is what i did for my mandrake 9.1 on a dell inspiron 8100 using a linksys wpc11 wireless card.
First i ran logged in as root. Ran cardctl ident and took note of the manfid. Then i created a hermes.conf file by started up a editor and typing:
device "orinoco_cs"
class "network"
module "hermes", "orinoco", "orinoco_cs"
# LinkSys WPC11
card "Instant Wireless Network PC Card"
manfid 0x###, 0x### #substitute your addresses from the cardctl ident
bind "orinoco_cs"
Saved that to the /etc/pcmcia/.
Then
/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart
You should here two short beeps.
Then i ran the drakconnect wizard, checked only expert settings, configured my eth0 which is my internal nic to boot dhcp but i decided not to have the service to start at boot, for the eth1 i made it start up at boot, filled in the my Essid "MyHome". As for everything else i left it blank, cuz im currently not running a WEP.
As for not seeing those fields winterbourne did u happen to maximize the box cuz i know i couldnt till i maximized it. But if it doesnt show i get u the commands to do it w/o the gui.
Thanks to finegan and some other internet tutorials to get this up and running

Success and thank you
Greetings
If all my Linux issues were so easily dealt with ...
I ran into the same situation regarding installing Mandrake 9.1 on my HP Ominbook 900 with an Orinoco Gold card.
Thank you azeral - from one newbie to one who is definately not totally green behind the ears.
As a general comment to all - keep searching those boards, and if you are lucky, you will find a solution as well laid out as this one.
Enjoy,
Michael

(i have drake9.1 and linksys wpc11 and i had done exactly what azeral said to set mine up, and it works great)
when you go
ifconfig
does it give you an eth0 and eth1? if so then you're card is rockin.
to set the ssid try going
iwconfig eth1 essid "SSID HERE"
