Mandrake 9.1 installed but now boot problem

Just installed Mandrake 9.1 on my laptop and the install went great. clicked on reboot button when prompted and on reboot, went through loading then came to login screen. Was expecting the screen shown in manual but just got a blank "DOS" like screen. Tried logging in as "root" and used my root password I set up during installation. Next line came up:
"[root@localhost root]#"
What do I do now? I was expecting the login screen where you picked who you were and then it would send me into the First Time Wizard. Thanks for any help you can offer!

when this line come up "[root@localhost root]#" that means that u r logged in the system and u have to type the command "startx" for the GUI to spring up...

OK...typed in startx at the [root@localhost root]# prompt and received this message:

execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 13)
giving up
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
[root@localhost root]#

I am totally in the dark on Linux and everything about it so I have no idea of what any of this means.

i do not work on mandrake but RH.. so cannot help u in full but HEY! they all are linuxes :)

u r a good observer and sincerely want to solve the problem...
what i gather from the messages u have sent is that your video card is not properly configured... the driver is not properly loaded..

so now u shud know what to do :)

and do not worry buddy. eveything has a start. u will soon be solving other people problems.. so don't feel discouraged...

Xing
