Mandrake 9.0 Startup Problem in X

Admittedly I'm a newbie, so maybe this is an easy question to answer (hopefully). Anyway, I had Mandrake 9.0 succesfully up and running, then I installed sound drivers for my aureal soundcard, got that working ok. Eventually the sound stopped working, so I figured the driver crashed or something so I rebooted my computer. As it was shutting down it froze as it was trying to unmount a windows share, so I just hit the reset button. It booted up fine, except my mouse didn't work anymore. I restarted, and then it went through all the startup stuff and then screen just blank, then there was a flash of a thin line across the middle of the screen, then it just went blank and didn't respond any more and just stays blank.

I then went step by step through the startup and it seems that this is happening as it loads the "dm" service. I can still go into runlevel 3 ok and access everything, but I can't get into X anymore. I figured something was messed up so I reinstalled Mandrake, but then the same thing happened, so I have no idea what possibly could be causing this... Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

I've had this problem a few times in Mandrake, and to fix it, all I had to do was either rename xf86config.conf-old to xf86config.conf. You can find the files in etc/x11. If that doesent work, try running xf86xonfig, and resetting all of your video stuff. Let me know it it works for you.
