Mandrake 9.0 Installation Problems: X-Server, GUI Problems?

OK-

Ive installed Mandrake 9.0 on 2 machines before with no problem.
They were both running Windows XP Pro. The dual boot installation went fine.

I just bought a new Microtel PC, with Lindows 3.0 installed on, and wanted to upgrade that as well.

When I booted off of the CD, I receieved no error messages.
I went through all the steps, until I got to configuring the
X Server. The monitor it finds no problem....( NEC ),
its the video card thats failing. The motherboard has a built in system with 8mb of memory. It came factory default with 128 mb...and I added a 256 chip. So I think there's enough memory.

When it defaults to 'Vesa' type, I try and test the screen, and get the error message 'no EE found'??

Ive checked my limited documentation of what came with the PC,
and all I can come up with is that its a TRITON motherboard, with on-board audio and video.

**If I go through the installation, when it boots up, I get the login prompt. I can log in as the root.....but cant get the GUI working?

I know a few other people that have had this problem....

What do you think?

Please send the result of
cat /proc/pci
The thing is that you need to fing the right driver for your graphic card. Among other entries in /proc/pci it should be listed. Then you only need to google for the right driver or just ask there, for sure there's someone which driver works with (and where to get it from).

I have the drivers for the card on the CD that was included with the PC. I think its Trident or Savage Drivers....that's all thats really listed on the CD.

Question is....how can I install the drivers through the installation? There's no option for choosing location of drivers.

It just gives you a list of available vendors...trident being one of them. But it doesnt work?

It depends on the format of the drivers. Insert the cd into your cddrive, mount it and browse. I guess there will be .tar.gz files. Such files are archives. To unpack, copy a file into a safe place, cd the to directory you copied it to and use
tar zxvf filename.tar.gz
A new directory will be created. Among other files, there should be also README or INSTALL describing the installation process.

In case of trouble, post again.
