Mandrake 8.1 network connection
 

I have just installed Mandrake 8.1, my first contact with Linux.

I have been reading about Linux for some time in a general sort of way and expected Mandrake 8.1 to work out of the box.

My immediate problem is that I cannot connect to the internet.

I am using the same information as used to connect with Windows ME.

I have tried the Wizard when the installation failed and also entering by hand.

There is no indication of the fault just 'go back and check '

I don.t know how to check apart from entering the information again, and this doesn't work.

Can anyone help me to get started?

you need to ensure that your modem is correctly installed, and that it will even work under linux. if it's an internal modem, check linmodems.org

if it is definitely installed, start by using wvdial on a prompt line to establish your conection, use wvdialconf to configure it. once youve got that far, then you can probably use the wiazards and such like to do it all prettily.

I would point out that this is the third time today i've given out the linmodems address, please search this forum for more niformation before asking new questions. thanks

My modem is a Fritz internal running ISDN of Freeserve, not a win-modem, sorry I should have made this clear.
Mandrake recognises the card and after running the wizard tells me it is working.

I am at a loss!
