Mandrake 8.1 Kernel rebuild

I have to rebuild by Kernel as I need to enable SCSI for my digital camera. I have done a load of reading up on this somewhat daunting task and am hitting a brick wall.

Most of the instructions I have read say go to:

/usr/src/linux

which doesn't exist! (Only /usr/src/RPM)

One guide said try mounting your installation CDROM and going to the /Mandrake/RPMS directory and typing:

rpm -i kernel*

but that just tells me that I already have the kernel installed.

Anyone know of a good guide to help me with this? I need some serious hand holding with this, not a guide that assumes good Linux knowledge!

Cheers,

Rob.

hmm, yeah that's odd advice, as I think it drops out as soon as it hits and error.. which it will straight away...

you need to install the kernel-source rpm from the *2nd* cd, so go to that directory and just do

rpm -ivh kernel-source-2.4.8-26mdk.i586.rpm

(just press tab when you've typed kernel and it should fill the rest in for you).

that will install the source. check the kernel howto for more information. linuxdoc.org

That's what I call service. :-)

Thanks acid, seems I need ncurses-devel, so I'll download that and try it again!
