mandrake 10.1 won't boot

Hello I have a newbie problem......

I bought mandrake 10.1 on ebay and installed it , set it up.... and it won't boot .... first I get a 1790-disk 0 error... then the boot f1 comes up and I use that .. then go into rescue and reinstall the boot loader and mount the file system...all with no result.
I am running an old slow under 300mhz compag system with a maxtor 37g harddrive that previously had windows 98 on it .

Welcome to LQ!

This proably is not a newbie problem. I think this is a hardware problem with Compaq BIOS unable to handle your HDD. There was probably some sort of Disk Manager for W98 what made your disk compatible. I believe this is the root of your problem now because you did not remove this Manager before installing Linux (Linux does not need it anyway).
I've to say this is all nothing but a wild guess, you may get some ideas though.
