mandrake 10.1 real player codec problem

I have installed Real Player via rpm and when I try and use it I get an error saying that it has a problem with the codec or decoder "cook.so.6.0".

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is and how to fix it?

Is there any other software I could install for listening to real audio that might work better?

I have heard of the Streamtuner software but I want to listen to the BBC and it only uses Real streams which I understand can only be played with Real Player.

Many thanks

Hi,

just to let you know that I have exactly the same problem and googling has not been able to find the answer - yet.

You may find that you have some success with RealPlayer when using the mozilla browser instead of konqueror, I know I do. I have the same setup (Mandy 10.1, RealPlayer 10) and have found that when trying to view .ram files I get Kaffine loading up (KDE's own media player) rather than RealPlayer when I use Konquerer. When using Mozilla it loads up RealPlayer.

I've tried changing the file associations on Konqueror but that as not stopped Kaffine from loading up. I've also tried to configure Kaffine under the codecs section, by pointing it to the RealPlayer codecs directory (where you will find cook.so.6.0) - but I still get the same message.

If I find out what is wrong I'll let you know. Likewise someone please let me know! :)

Hi,

Thanks for that.
I am now being told (on the Real Player forum) that Real Player 10 doesn't work in Konquorer because of bugs in Konquorer.
However I have also discovered that v8 of Real Player will work, so I have installed this and it does!

So I suggest you try that.

Can you get Real Player to work if you use Mozilla???

Thanks for the info.

RealPlayer 10 does indeed work with Mozilla on my setup (Mandy 10.1), and rather well I might add.

I may try to install RealPlayer 8 alongside 10 then and see if that works.

While we're on I wondered if you had tried to do any recording of audio.
Reason I wanted Real Player was to record BBC radio. I have used Audacity to record (as it's good and comes with 10.1), however it seemed to keel over after recording for about 30 minutes.
Don't suppose you've had any experience in doing a similar thing have you???

thanks

I have never tried to record audio before (to be honest I never knew it was possible!) but it may be interesting to try it out. I'll have ago and let you know how I get on.
