Mandrake 10.1 login help

Complete newbie here with limited technical skills (but learning more every day).

I purchased ($10) Mandrake 10.1 from Lan205. I'm running a dual boot with XP. The installation went fine with one exception. The summary screen listed 4 disks but I only received 3 and the 4th disk was listed as having KDE 3.2 (KDE is the GUI desktop right?).

After install I rebooted my computer and chose linux (no problems yet)

I think I booted into shell (that's the command prompt interface-right?).

I entered my username and password....and was left with a prompt....I was expecting to boot straight into the desktop.

I read about trying "switchdesk kde" at the prompt but it is not being recognized.

Am I missing something or is the desktop interface (KDE) not loaded?

If so, how do I download and install the desktop in shell and set things up to "boot" to the GUI desktop.

thanks, Sipo

I could be wrong, but I do believe KDE is on the third disc. Are you booting into a graphical desktop? If not, at the command prompt, type "starx"--minus the quotes. The default desktop for Fedora is GNOME, though you can easily add KDE.

OK, I typed in "starx" (minus the quotes).....but got nothing....not recognized.

Any other ideas on how I can troubleshoot this and determine:

1)do I have the graphical environment loaded

2)if so, how do I get to it

3)if not, how do I load it

4)modify my setup to boot to the graphical environment

The command is "startx".

OK, I put the startx command in...here is a sample of the error I received (I tried to pick out what I consider the important parts-let me know if I need to include more info):

There is a problem with your xrog.conf. Try running "xorgconfig" as root.
