Mandrake 10.1 freezing before login

Recently i've started trying linux. First i installed mandrake 10 and i liked it, but i wanted to try somthing else. So installed SuSE. Then i wanted Mandrake back, so i installed 10.1 on another partition. This messed up my ability to boot to SuSE, and mandrake wouldn't load when i tried to load it. It got stuck at the screen where the login box appears. But the login box didn't appear. Instead another of the same screen seemed to appear. As in, there's the mandrake logo in the bottom right and on a straight diagonal line to the top left another logo is there. Like there are two screens. It doesn't do anything from there. I thought the problem might have somthing to do with the two linuxs being installed, so i wiped both and created a new partition where i installed mandrake 10.1 But i'm still getting the screen problem. Help?

If your bootloader allows you to, boot to linux single. Or there may be a failsafe option. If so, use it.

then use your text editor to open /etc/inittab.
in inittab you'll see the following line near the top:
id:5:initdefault:
change it to read:
id:3:initdefault:

reboot.
Then log in as root and run mcc.
Click on Hardware, then Graphical server.
This should allow you to reconfigure your X11 or Xorg setup.
when finished, type startx to try it out.

I always boot to the cli (init 3) just in case there's any glitch in X I won't be trapped. Then I login as user at the CLI and startx.
