i am a newbie when it comes to linux, i found a site and it said mandrake is for me. what i need is an os to be an backup server/web server. i need it to host my pages and be able to work along my main computer. i have no clue and need help!!!

I should've been more clear. These should be included in your by your distro, mandrake. Now whether they were installed, I can't tell you. My guess it would depend on what kind of install you chose. Nor do I know what mandrake's preferred package format is (rpm, i think). to see if these are installed, you could try:
rpm -qa | grep httpd
rpm -qa | grep samba
but this'll only work if mandrake is an rpm distro. if these aren't installed, you can see if your install cd has these packages and you can install the packages on your install cd. My guess is that the supplied packages will be slightly older versions. Use the links above for documentation, how to's, or to get the newest versions if you want.
