For the first time today, man failed, complaining that it couldn't run most. I had never installed most. Did man change?

Yes. The new man-db package sets MANPAGER to most. I never knew about this.

it is offtopic, but see man page, most existed in May, 1999.
(But if it was set to most a dependency is missing somewhere....)

I don't understand you. man's man page doesn't specify that it needs most.

It's not a dependency the same as a library's: ldd won't turn it up. mandb.(c)sh sets an environment variable.

yes, you are right, it is a different kind of dependency. But it is still a dependency.
