Making Xine faster

I'm using Slack 9.1. I use Xine to play videos, but I'm not satisfied with the output. Is there any way I can improve the output?
As u can see I'm a newbie. Here's my system configuration:
Pentium 4 1.6GHz
256MB RAM
NVIDIA TNT2 Riva M64 32MB graphics card.

i run most of the time xine or mplayer on a 566MHZ/Ram 280 MB , it is enough fast.
it might be a video card problem if you don't have nvidia proprio drivers.

Hi there akudewan!!!

The best way to improve the output is to play around at "video" settings. However, the very best thing to do is to install mplayer. It's so, so much better and faster then Xine. I cannot understand why most distributions are not shipped with it yet . (Mandrake 9.2 is, but seems to be hidden during the installation though, but it comes within the 3 CD's...).

It's very simple to compile and any dependencies problem should be easy to resolve, specially using a sweet distro as Slackware. In a nice machine as yours, don't waste time with Xine, install mplayer and never look back .

Good point mrcheeks!. You must have nvidia drivers installed to get a nice (and very nice) performance. I've started to write a quick tutorial for nvidia drivers, but it's far from finished, but it might help you out if you never installed them before .

Good luck!

Everyone thanks for replying. I downloaded mplayer, it seems to be much smoother, but I cant use fullscreen. When I press "f" the window becomes fullscreen, but the video remains of the same size. How can I make the video fit in the screen.

Also, when loading the NVIDIA drivers, I cannot adjust brightness in the video, so I cant use them.

Very strange about the full screen stuff. Try "man mplayer" at the terminal. A list (warn you, huge list) of commands will show up. You may want to try using a different parameter when initializing mplayer, like these:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/commandline.html

some examples about output devices is found here:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/devices.html

If NVidia drivers works fine, but you cannot adjust brightness, use this at the command line:

Code:
xgamma -gamma <value>
Default is 1.0. 2.0 can be really bright, so try using values like 1.3, 1.4, etc...

Good luck!

This is because you're not using xv drivers for mplayer's output, but x11. Try run "mplayer -vo xv foo.avi" and see if that solves the problem. If not, you can still get fullscreen by putting "mplayer -vo x11 -zoom" (you can omit -vo x11 if you want).
To get xv drivers (strongly recommended) you need to install the latests drivers for your videocard. Do a "xvinfo" and see if you're using it or not.

Hope this helps
