making usb thumb/pen drive to boot linux

i want to make my usb pen drive 256 mb to be able to boot linux
can i load red hat 9 on it
please answer me as soon as possible since it is urgent

I would suggest you use something like dsl. check it out, detailed instructions on how to do it:

Being able to boot from a USB device generally depends on whether or not your BIOS supports that option. If the mobo does support it, just confirm that the USB device appears at the top of the boot sequence; if the mobo doesn't support it you are probably out of luck. I did see something about booting from a floppy, loading in the necessary USB kernel modules, then continuing the boot process from the USB device, but I don't know how practical this is.
