making programs open on startup

I would like to make a few programs open at startup when I turn on my computer (something that windows would do without even asking my permission). I was wondering if anyone out there knew how.

I'm not sure if I'll find the answer because when I searched that exact title that I made for this thread I came up with a whole bunch of threads titled "why windows is better then linux". So I'm really hoping that someone will have the answer.

~/.xinitrc

last few lines prior to launching a window manager would be your applications:

gkrellm -w &
mozilla &

exec fluxbox

some window managers have configuration files which allow you to launch apps specific to that WM.

If the programs you are talking about are kde programs, you could put links to them in ~/.kde/Autostart .

You could, for instance, put in a link to the konquer web browser in this folder, right click on the icon, and change the execute line to your favorite website:

konqueror --profile webbrowsing http://www.linuxquestions.org

....... and an example of creating a softlink to do this: (for example)

ln -s /usr/bin/kspread /home/your_username/.kde/Autostart
