Making my own operating system!
I'm in college taking some of my 300 level classes now; one of which is Operating Systems (and Concurrent Programming).

I asked the Prof about making our own OS and maybe implementing some of this stuff. He told me it would probably be better for me just to get into the Linux kernel. He said that it's hard to get into, but once you're there it's not too hard to understand.

I'd like to get involved with the Linux kernel, but I would really like to make my own OS too. It doesn't have to be anything grand of coarse! If I can get it to boot up, give me a prompt, and let me do some basic file system stuff I'd be really happy.

However, I really don't know what I would be getting into. Can anyone direct me to a resource or two about getting into the Linux kernel or beginning my own OS? I like to play with stuff }=-)

So far, I've unsuccessfully tried to compile the Linux kernel. That's as far as I've gotten. I wanted to add BTTV to my kernel, but when I boot the kernel, it complains about not supporting ext3 file systems and stuff (which I've decided isn't a good thing since all I use is ext3).

I really like Linux though! I got rid of Windows completely a few weeks ago and I don't miss it much. I just can't play my Might and Magic games now. Didn't play them much before though...

... I should also mention that I've got Partition Magic and Ghost + CD Burner ready to go in case anything *bad* should happen!

Maybe you should take a look at Linux from Scratch.
