making dvd default to cdrom(easy for guru)

how do I make videolan automatically look at cdrom when looking for dvd. I tried linking the 2 in /dev but rh9 didn't want to do that.

What do you mean by "didn't want to do that" did you get errors? I have never installed a dvd-rom in Linux but /dev/cdrom is just a link to /dev/hdx, I am assuming that dvd-rom are setup similair? If so then you cant have that many levels of links, you cant have '/dev/dvd -> /dev/hdx -> /dev/cdrom'. /dev/cdrom isnt really a device so you shouldnt have to even specify it, pointing to /dev/dvd should work just fine. Maybe if you posted a bit more about what you are trying to accomplish and what the limitations of videolan are that are making you have to do this I could be more helpful.

well, when I want to play a dvd with videolan I have to change the device to /dev/cdrom or it doesn't see it. It comes up with /dev/dvd as default but won't play until I change the path. I thought there might be away to alias or ln /dev/dvd to /dev/cdrom so I won't have to change the path everytime.

I just installed my DVD rom on linex 7.3 I created a sym link to the /dev/hdd cause thats where it was :-) ln -s /dev/dvd /dev/hdd. By the way make sure that DMA is enabled for the drive or the play might be choppy. I used this command hdparm -d1 /dev/hdd there is also the /etc/sysconfig/harddisks file that you can modify
