making Alpine mail client to use utf-8 while saving email archive folder file

how do i force the Alpine mail client software (Alpine v2.20) to read/write my email archive files (local folders) with utf-8 encoding ? otherwise text searches with grep and alike fail for characters such as - just to make a few examples here :

é (\351) or ï (=?ISO-8859-15?Q?=EF?=)

importantly, i would love to see very old (ASCII) emails of mine that are stored within the archive files (or folders) 'automatically' converted into modern utf-8 during Alpine's read-mail (?and write-mail) procedures. i use Emacs as text editor.

is there a safe way to do such in Alpine - or do i need to convert such files with other tools or methods ?

many thanks in advance, bye, pisti
