Make your own Distro?

I was wondering one day if it is possible to just install the bare minimum of software. (console, kernel, stuff like that) Compiling and installing everything on your own untill it is running like a real distro like Redhat with X and everything?

I know it would be easier to just install something like Redhat or Mandrake but I thought it would be a good learning experience if you could do it.
If anyone knows what I am talking about and knows how, could you please shed some light on it?

I once installed a computer from mulinux, a floppy distro. The computer ended up with some strange behaviours that I couldn't figure out.

Not only that, but if you google a bit (Id give you the link but I don't have it with me) you can learn how to customize a knoppix live CD distro to make it exactly what you need.

A friend of mine and I are exploring that option to open a linux consulting business in our spare time...peddling linux solutions to non-profit laboratories (He's a lab tech and has contacts).
