Make VLC the default player

I have installed VLC Media Player, but every time I double click on a video file it opens Totem.
How can I make VLC the default player?

r u using KDE windowmananger?

if so get into kde control centre then components then file associations then video and for the respective video format click on vlc and move it up to the top

if vlc is not on list on RH side then click on add and type it in first to add if that fails....then browse to the executable likely to be in /usr/bin or /opt/ or whereever you installed it

Hi aus9, I'm using Ubuntu 6.06 with Gnome 2.14.3

You can also try & right click the video file and choose properties, somewhere in properties you can select open with, select vlc

Yes, it's true!
Thanks.

But is there a way to associate file types with programs (like you can do on Windows) in Gnome?

EDIT: I just found it, you have to right click in the file, select properties, go to "Open with" tab and select the default player.
