make mpg file size smaller

I'm working to reduce the file size of several mpg's I had ripped for backup with dvdrip from DVD's.

I'm wondering what program I use to reduce a 700MB mpg file to, say, 175MB.

I can't imagine this isn't possible. I've seen identical mpg's before, except that one was better quality and a larger file size.

Any suggestions?

You have to recode your files and resize in process. Mencoder (comes with famous MPlayer) can do the job, also there is heavyweight Cinelerra.

cinelerra looks nice, but way too much for me.

any suggestions on how to use mencoder from the commandline to reduce the file size? or any documentation you would recommend.
