"Make" Command Help on Suse v8.1 - Modem Install
I am a newbie to the linux world. I am so close to installing a modem (I think). I issue the make command but it wont install. Says I have few arguments. This is the command:
$bash make install I am trying to install a PCTel modem with PCT789 chipset. THe readme and faq do not mention what to do. I ran it in the root console. Is that correct? |
Did you follow the procedure below?
./configure make su ->pwd make install Post the error message as well if you want people to help. (If you're using sudo - a log will be generated) |
I got it to work! I did not have "make" installed. I can not believe I need to download a command. Thankz for the help.

Actually just about every command needs to be installed. It's just usually by your distro. "make" is not actually a built-in command either (i.e like "ls" or "rm"). It is a prog like any other. Although it is fairly ubiquitous. If you chose to not include any "development" tools in your distro's installation, I could see this not being installed by default.

I got the suse distro from my teacher. It was only one disc, so that is probably why I had to download several things to get them to work. I just got the install disc. I might get the mandrake distro because the reviews I read say it is good for a linux newbie. It has three discs so I should have everything I need on the discs.

I use both Mandrake and SuSE myself. Mandrake is great, but SuSE seems a little more "cohesive" (hard to explain). I'd personally recommend Mandrake though, just based on the fact that it doesn't include proprietary software (i.e YaST). If you have three discs, then you probably have the "Internationlization" CD as well, which basically just includes a ton of string sets and docs in other languages. The main setup CDs are on Disc 1 and 2.
