Major problem with video!

I started "playing" with linux 2 years ago and I have used redhat, mandrake and SuSE distributions. I haven't seen yet any .mpeg or .avi video, so I'm curious what is going wrong every time...

I have installed MPlayer and xine and always the same result: I see vertical multicolor stripes on my screen! Sound is good!

I have a Diamond Viper2Z200 (S3 Savage2000) graphics card and I don't now if the problem insists due to hardware incompatibilities or software problems.

Had anybody the same problem with me?I cannot explain this at all...

Thanks!

Hmm.... I have horizontal(sp?) stripes or colors on part of my screen when I am booting up the X environment. Can you use your GUI(KDE, Gnome, others?) If not then it may just be a problem with how the card was set up on your system. Do you dual boot? You could always try a .avi or .mpg in Windows to see if it works. Then you could be sure it was either a card problem or software problem in linux.

Sorry I can't help much but all I can really do is cd through directories But we all gotta start somewhere dont we?

Question s3 Savage2000 64mb Video Problem

I've got the same problem. No matter what the resolution is, It shows tons of horzontal colored bars that are generally very short... a pixel or two long, and ussually bright colors. It messes things up really bad. So bad infact that any and all text is unreadable. It is barely readable using 8bit color settings, but this card should handle a lot more than that. The other weird things that happes is when a window is dragged over text and then dragged somehwere else so the text is showing again, most times the text is clear until you let go of the window, but this only works in 8bit color. Setting the resolution to something else has no effect, and neither does changing the installed card drivers. (Using Mandrake 10.0 default drivers for Savage2000 vid card). I think it might be a driver issue, but I havn't got a clue where to download new drivers for this vid card. Found some for sindoze that were labled as linux drivers, but turns out they were mis named.

Anyone have any idea where I can find linux drivers for this ancient card?
