Question Maintaining Updates

Dear All,

Is there a way to automatically track whether there are updates for the software packages installed within a linux system.

I know there's the RedHat update engine and apt from freshrpms, but there are for rpms. What about self-compiled soure codes?

What about CheckInstall? Has anyone used it before to convert compiled binaries to a RPM? And would RedHat update engine/apt work with that?
