mainboard died; want to put HDD into another PC
hi there,
as the subject says, my mainboard, to be exact, my onboard RAID controller (Highpoint HPT370) died yesterday. I'd like to install the drive into another PC so that I can use the system.
My problem is, that the drive in the old machine was called "hde" and a raid-module was loaded to be able to access the drive.
Now I changed every entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst and /etc/fstab from "hde" to "hda", but I get a kernel panic when the boot sequence reaches the part where it should mount the drives.
Can somebody please tell me how I can make the drive boot from a plain IDE controller?
thanks a lot in advance,
cheers,
bbking

just a shot in the dark... you didn't mention if you tweaked any "root=" lines to go along with the change to "/dev/hda". If they aren't lined up, I think it panics where you're seeing. (I think I've done this, thus the question.) If it's a RAID thing, well I've no experience with that. Anyway,
if it''s short enough, could you post the original menu.lst file? (and maybe the mod'ed version that panics)

thanks for the reply..
here is the important part of the modified menu.lst:
# Modified by YaST2. Last modification on Thu Oct 14 02:21:25 2004
color white/blue black/light-gray
default 0
timeout 8
gfxmenu (hd0,1)/boot/message

kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 vga=0x314 splash=silent desktop hda=ide-scsi hdalun=0 showopts
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd
and this is the original:

just to make sure: the drive is now on the first IDE controller as primary-master.
do you have any further ideas?
thanks in advance
