mailx not working in Debian

mailx does not seem to work on my Debian system. I got the following error returned to me when I sent a mail message:

"This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients, This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

somebody@somewhere.com
retry time not reached for any host after a long failure period."

The address pings, so it's getting resolved. Any feedback would be appreciated. thanks

here's the fix:

the system was using exim4 as the MTA.

In the file /etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf, I changed the variable
dc_eximconfig_configtype from 'smarthost' to 'internet'.
- After saving this file, I executed update-exim4.conf

the system can now send mail outside itself.
