mailx attachments for Outlook 2007

I am sending a group of people a PDF attachment using
Code:
echo $mailmesg|mailx -a $statementFile -s "$subject" -r from="$from" $to
With the bash variables set appropriately.

Most recipients correctly receive their attachments but for those usuing Outlook 2007 the attachment appears in the mail body in its binary form.

If you email those users with Outlook 2007 from another Windows machine the attachment renders correctly showing the PDF attachment.

I tried sending mail by constructing the mime headers followed by a base64 encoding of the PDF. I won't bore you with the code since it produces the same result.

I would prefer to use the mailx command with the -a flag. Does anyone have any suggestions how to get Outlook to render correctly using the mailx -a command?

(Please note some companies twist protocols and open standards solely for commercial gain so please understand that I am quite reluctant to help out keeping the status quo. That said do export both messages as plain text, diff them side by side then tell us what the difference is (headers, body, MIME types, everything). *I use 'mpack' for attachments. Any MUA not recognizing Base64 attachments is SOL IMNSHO.

Used alternate mailer

I ended up using ssmtp to send the mail. Another alternative that seemed to work well was swaks.
